Asbestos Removal FAQs

answered

How do I know if my roof contains asbestos?
If your home or building was built before the mid-1980s, there’s a good chance the roofing material contains asbestos. Common types include corrugated Super 6 or Super 8 cement sheets, Decramastic tiles, and flat cement panels. The only way to confirm it is to have a sample professionally tested. Never try to test or disturb the material yourself.
Is my roof still safe if it contains asbestos?
If the roofing material is in good condition and hasn’t been broken, cracked, or disturbed, it generally poses a low risk. The danger arises when asbestos-containing materials are damaged or deteriorating, as this can release fine fibres into the air. If your roof is ageing or showing signs of wear, it’s worth getting a professional assessment sooner rather than later.
Can I remove an asbestos roof myself?
No. In New Zealand, the removal of non-friable asbestos in quantities greater than 10 square metres must be carried out by a licensed asbestos removalist. Even below that threshold, attempting to remove it yourself is risky and strongly discouraged. The consequences of improper removal, both for your health and legally, are serious.
What happens after the asbestos roof is removed?
Once the asbestos is safely removed and disposed of, your property will need a replacement roof. We handle the full project from start to finish, including the new roof installation, so you’re not left coordinating multiple contractors. It’s also a great opportunity to upgrade to a modern, long-lasting material like Colorsteel.
